Datadog, explained
Written by EduVerseWhat it is
Datadog is a commercial observability platform that runs as a cloud service. You install the Datadog Agent on your servers or in your Kubernetes cluster, it sends metrics, logs and traces to Datadog, and there you build dashboards, set up monitors and search everything in one web interface.
Why teams use it
Running Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch and Jaeger yourself takes real work. Datadog takes that over and links the signals together, so you can jump from a spike on a graph to the traces and logs of that moment. The trade-off is cost, which grows with your data volume, and depending on a single vendor.
An example from work
A monitor posts in your team’s Slack channel: latency for checkout-service is above its threshold. You open the APM page, pick one of the slowest traces and jump from that trace straight to its logs, where a timeout from the payment provider shows up.
