What it is

PostgreSQL, often called Postgres, is an open-source relational database known for following the SQL standard closely and for being easy to extend. Besides regular tables, it supports JSON columns, arrays, full-text search and custom types. Extensions such as PostGIS add entire new capabilities, like geographic queries.

Why teams use it

Teams pick PostgreSQL when they want reliable data integrity, with transactions, constraints and foreign keys, plus room to grow into more specialized features. Its JSONB columns cover many cases where people would otherwise reach for a document database. Every major cloud provider offers it as a managed service.

An example from work

You set DATABASE_URL in your .env to something like postgresql://postgres:secret@localhost:5432/shop and run your ORM’s migration command. Then you open psql, connect to the database and type \dt to list the tables the migration just created. Typing \d users shows each column of that table with its type and constraints.
