TypeScript, explained

Written by EduVerse

What it is

TypeScript is JavaScript with type annotations added. You write .ts files where variables, function parameters and return values can carry types, and the compiler checks them before outputting plain JavaScript. The types are removed before the code runs; they exist only to catch mistakes while you write and build.

Why teams use it

In a large JavaScript codebase it’s easy to pass the wrong thing to a function and only find out in production. TypeScript flags that in your editor, and it makes autocomplete and safe renaming across files possible. The cost is a build step and some extra syntax, which pays off quickly once a codebase grows.

An example from work

You rename a property in the shared User type from userName to displayName and run npx tsc --noEmit. The compiler lists every file that still uses the old name, each with a “does not exist on type” error, so you fix them all before anything reaches the browser.
