MySQL, explained
Written by EduVerseWhat it is
MySQL is an open-source relational database: data lives in tables with rows and columns, and you work with it through SQL. It runs as a separate server your application connects to. Oracle develops it today, and it has long been a standard choice for web apps and CMS platforms such as WordPress.
Why teams use it
MySQL is easy to set up and supported by nearly every hosting provider, framework and language. Because so many people have used it for so long, almost any error you hit has already been answered online. It covers what most web apps need, though some teams prefer PostgreSQL for its wider feature set.
An example from work
You clone a Laravel project, run php artisan migrate and get an “Access denied for user” error with code 1045. The database username or password in your .env file doesn’t match your local MySQL installation. You correct DB_USERNAME and DB_PASSWORD, run the command again, and the tables appear.
