New Relic, explained

What it is

New Relic is a commercial observability platform, best known for application performance monitoring (APM). You add a New Relic agent to your application, and it reports response times, throughput, errors and slow database calls per transaction, alongside infrastructure metrics, logs and browser data.

Why teams use it

It answers questions like “which endpoint got slower after today’s deploy?” without you building any monitoring yourself. Its query language, NRQL, lets you slice the data any way you like. It competes directly with Datadog; both cover much the same ground, so the choice often depends on what the company already uses.

An example from work

Response times climb after an afternoon deploy, visible as a deployment marker on the APM chart. In the query builder you run SELECT percentile(duration, 95) FROM Transaction FACET name SINCE 1 hour ago, one endpoint stands out, and its transaction trace shows a slow new database query.
