Electron, explained

Written by EduVerse

What it is

Electron is a framework for building desktop apps with web technology. Each app bundles its own copy of the Chromium browser engine to draw the interface and Node.js to reach the file system and operating system, so one HTML, CSS and JavaScript codebase becomes an app for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Why teams use it

Teams that already build for the web can ship a desktop app without learning a separate native toolkit for every operating system. The cost is size and memory use: every Electron app carries its own browser engine. Lighter alternatives such as Tauri use the web view the operating system already provides.

An example from work

You open VS Code, choose Help > Toggle Developer Tools, and the familiar Chrome DevTools appear, complete with an Elements panel full of HTML. The editor you use every day is an Electron app, built with the same web technology as the sites you work on.
