Google Cloud, explained

Written by EduVerse

What it is

Google Cloud (also called GCP) is Google’s cloud platform. It offers the usual building blocks, such as virtual machines in Compute Engine, file storage in Cloud Storage and managed databases in Cloud SQL, along with services that grew out of Google’s own internal tools, like BigQuery for analyzing large datasets.

Why teams use it

Teams often choose Google Cloud for data and container work. BigQuery lets you run SQL over very large tables without managing a database server, and GKE is managed Kubernetes from the company that originally created Kubernetes. Cloud Run is another reason: you hand it a container image and it runs and scales it for you.

An example from work

You deploy a small service with gcloud run deploy, and a minute later the terminal prints a Service URL ending in run.app. The first request after a quiet period is a bit slow, because Cloud Run scaled down to zero instances and has to start your container again. That delay is called a cold start.
