Oracle Database, explained

What it is

Oracle Database is a commercial relational database from Oracle Corporation. You talk to it with SQL plus PL/SQL, Oracle’s own language for stored procedures and packages, and it has extensive features for clustering, backup and recovery of very large systems.

Why teams use it

Banks, insurers and governments have run their core systems on Oracle for decades, and those systems are still maintained and extended. Teams choose it, or keep it, for its stability and vendor support. New projects more often pick PostgreSQL, which covers most needs without commercial licensing.

An example from work

You run a query in a legacy project and get ORA-00942: table or view does not exist, even though the table is definitely there. It belongs to another schema, so you write APP_OWNER.CUSTOMERS instead of CUSTOMERS, or ask the DBA for a grant or a synonym.
