Microsoft SQL Server, explained
Written by EduVerseWhat it is
Microsoft SQL Server is Microsoft’s relational database. Its SQL dialect is called T-SQL, and most people manage it with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). It runs on Windows and Linux, including in a Docker container, and Azure offers it as a managed cloud service.
Why teams use it
In companies built on Microsoft technology it’s the default choice: it works smoothly with .NET and Entity Framework, Active Directory sign-in and Azure. It also comes with tooling for reporting, data integration and backups. Outside that ecosystem, teams usually reach for PostgreSQL or MySQL.
An example from work
Out of habit you type SELECT * FROM Orders LIMIT 10 in SSMS and get a syntax error. T-SQL doesn’t support LIMIT: you write SELECT TOP 10 * FROM Orders instead, or use OFFSET and FETCH with an ORDER BY when you need paging.
