Bitbucket, explained
Written by EduVerseWhat it is
Bitbucket is Atlassian’s service for hosting Git repositories. Like GitHub and GitLab, it gives your team a shared place for the code, with pull requests for code review and a built-in CI/CD feature called Bitbucket Pipelines. Companies can use the cloud version or run it on their own servers.
Why teams use it
Its main draw is how closely it works with Jira and Confluence, which many companies already use for tickets and documentation. Once connected, any branch, commit or pull request that mentions a ticket key shows up on that Jira ticket. For a company that pays for Atlassian tools anyway, keeping the code there is the obvious step.
An example from work
Your ticket in Jira is PROJ-142, so you name your branch feature/PROJ-142-login-form. When you open the pull request in Bitbucket, the ticket’s development panel in Jira lists your branch, your commits and the open pull request. Your team lead can follow your progress without having to ask.
