IntelliJ IDEA, explained
Written by EduVerseWhat it is
IntelliJ IDEA is an IDE (integrated development environment) made by JetBrains, mainly for Java and Kotlin. Besides editing code, it understands your whole project: which classes exist, where every method is used, and how Maven or Gradle builds it. A debugger, a test runner and Git tools are built in.
Why teams use it
A plain editor sees text; IntelliJ sees structure. That means it can rename a method everywhere safely, point out mistakes before you compile and suggest fixes. VS Code with Java extensions can do a lot of this too, but many Java teams prefer IntelliJ because it handles large projects well without you assembling extensions first.
An example from work
You type a class name and it turns red because the import is missing. You press Alt+Enter, choose “Import class”, and the import line appears at the top. Later you press Shift twice to open Search Everywhere and jump straight to a controller you couldn’t find in the folder tree.
