JDK, explained

Written by EduVerse

What it is

The JDK (Java Development Kit) is the set of tools you install to write and build Java programs. It contains javac, the compiler that turns your .java files into bytecode, along with tools for debugging, packaging and generating documentation, plus everything needed to run the result.

Why teams use it

Running Java and building Java are different jobs: to compile code on your laptop or a build server, you need the compiler and its tools, so you install a JDK. Several vendors ship builds of the same open-source OpenJDK code, such as Eclipse Temurin and Amazon Corretto. Pick the Java version your project expects.

An example from work

You open a Spring Boot project, run ./mvnw package, and Maven stops with “No compiler is provided in this environment. Perhaps you are running on a JRE rather than a JDK?” Installing a JDK and pointing JAVA_HOME at it fixes the build.
