SQL, explained
Written by EduVerseWhat it is
SQL is the language you use to work with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQL Server. Instead of describing step by step how to find data, you describe the result you want, for example SELECT name, email FROM customers ORDER BY name, and the database works out how to get it.
Why teams use it
Tables linked by keys keep data consistent and let you combine it in many ways with joins, filters and grouping. SQL has been the standard for decades, so what you learn on one database mostly carries over to the next. ORMs like Prisma generate it for you, but you still need to read it.
An example from work
A customer says their order is missing from the dashboard. You open a database client such as DBeaver or psql, write a query that joins orders and customers on customer_id, and discover the order exists but has a status the dashboard filters out. Being comfortable with SQL turns that into a ten-minute fix.
