Kubernetes-native framework for running CI/CD pipelines as reusable tasks inside the cluster.
Tekton, explained
Written by EduVerseWhat it is
Tekton is an open-source framework for CI/CD pipelines that run inside Kubernetes. You describe Tasks (a series of steps, each in its own container) and Pipelines (Tasks in a set order) as Kubernetes YAML, and every run becomes a set of pods in the cluster.
Why teams use it
There’s no separate CI server to maintain: the pipeline runs on the same cluster as your applications and uses its resources, permissions and secrets. Tekton is fairly low-level, so it’s often used as a building block; OpenShift Pipelines, for example, is built on it. GitHub Actions or GitLab CI are easier to start with.
An example from work
Your merge request triggers a PipelineRun and the build-image task fails. You run tkn pipelinerun logs with the run’s name, scroll to the failing step and see that the container registry rejected the push, because the registry secret for the service account is missing.
