Gradle, explained

Written by EduVerse

What it is

Gradle is a build tool for Java, Kotlin and Android projects. It compiles your code, downloads the libraries you depend on, runs the tests and packages the result. You configure it in a build.gradle file written in Groovy, or in a build.gradle.kts file written in Kotlin.

Why teams use it

A real project needs many build steps and dozens of libraries. Gradle automates them and skips work that hasn’t changed since the last build, which keeps builds fast. Unlike Maven’s fixed XML, Gradle scripts can hold real logic: more flexible, but also easier to make complicated. It’s the standard build tool for Android.

An example from work

You clone an Android or Spring project and run ./gradlew build. The first run takes a while because the wrapper downloads the right Gradle version and every dependency. Then it compiles and tests, and ends with BUILD SUCCESSFUL, or with BUILD FAILED and the task and error that broke it.
