pip, explained
Written by EduVerseWhat it is
pip is the standard tool for installing Python packages. It downloads libraries from PyPI, the Python Package Index, together with whatever they depend on. A project usually lists its packages in a requirements.txt file, and you install them all at once with pip install -r requirements.txt.
Why teams use it
Python’s standard library is broad, but real projects need more, like a web framework or data tools. pip adds them with one command, usually inside a virtual environment (python -m venv .venv) so each project keeps its own packages. Newer tools such as Poetry and uv add lockfiles and speed, but pip ships with almost every Python installation.
An example from work
You run a script and get a ModuleNotFoundError saying there’s no module named requests. You did install it, but globally, while this project uses its own virtual environment. You activate .venv, run pip install -r requirements.txt, and the import works.
