Ruby, explained
Written by EduVerseWhat it is
Ruby is a dynamic, object-oriented language from Japan, designed around the idea that code should be pleasant to write and read. Everything is an object, even numbers, and the syntax is flexible enough that good Ruby often reads like a sentence.
Why teams use it
Most people meet Ruby through Rails, a web framework built on “convention over configuration” that lets a small team build a working web app very quickly. Raw speed isn’t its strength, but for many web apps developer time matters more, and well-known products like GitHub and Shopify are built on Rails.
An example from work
You join a startup whose product is a Rails app. Before anything works you run bundle install to fetch the gems listed in the Gemfile, and your first task, adding a phone number to users, starts with bin/rails generate migration AddPhoneToUsers phone:string.
