.NET, explained

Written by EduVerse

What it is

.NET is Microsoft’s open-source development platform, mostly used with the C# language. It includes a runtime, a large standard library and the dotnet command-line tool, plus frameworks such as ASP.NET Core for web APIs and Entity Framework Core for working with databases.

Why teams use it

It gives you one consistent toolset for web backends, desktop apps and cloud services, with strong tooling in Visual Studio and Rider. The original .NET Framework only runs on Windows; modern .NET also runs on Linux and macOS, so .NET services can run in Linux containers like everything else.

An example from work

You clone a .NET project and dotnet run fails with a message that no compatible .NET SDK was found. The repository’s global.json asks for a specific SDK version that isn’t on your machine, so you install that SDK, and then dotnet run restores the NuGet packages and starts the API.
